Siemens Strategically Invests in Skeleton Technologies to Expand Data Center Product Portfolio

Siemens recently announced a strategic investment in Skeleton Technologies and an exclusive partnership, integrating the latter’s high-performance supercapacitor technology into its electrical infrastructure product portfolio for data centers. Skeleton Technologies specializes in the research, development, and manufacturing of large-power energy storage systems, and its supercapacitor technology helps address instantaneous power spikes and provide peak-shaving solutions.

This solution aims to resolve a key bottleneck constraining data center expansion: large-scale, rapid, and repeated fluctuations in power load. AI workloads require simultaneous activation of thousands of high-performance chips, whose power consumption can surge or drop within milliseconds. After aggregation, megawatt-level power fluctuations can occur within seconds.

Skeleton Technologies’ supercapacitors address this industry-wide challenge. Acting as “shock absorbers” in electrical systems, they absorb sudden power fluctuations, protect critical equipment and the grid, while helping data center operators increase computing density without costly and time-consuming facility upgrades. The solution serves the broad industry ecosystem, supporting the construction of ultra-large-scale, high-density data centers and “AI factories.” It enables higher-density AI deployment, reduces grid-side power disturbances, and allows operators to rapidly deploy additional computing capacity without comprehensive redesign of existing facilities. The solution can be applied to existing AC power architectures and room retrofit projects, while also laying the foundation for future transition to 800-volt DC power architectures.

Siemens established a technology partnership with Skeleton Technologies in 2022 and began investing in the company in 2023. Siemens serves data center ecosystem partners and customers across the spectrum from grid to white space, with nine of the world’s top ten data center operators choosing to partner with Siemens.

Peter Koerte, Member of the Executive Board of Siemens AG and President of Smart Infrastructure, said the race for AI scale is increasingly evolving into a competition for power. Data center operators want to expand computing capacity quickly without waiting years for grid and facility infrastructure. Siemens’ expertise in electrical infrastructure, combined with Skeleton Technologies’ innovative supercapacitor technology, helps clients unlock more AI computing power, enhance system resilience, and accelerate business growth in a rapidly expanding market.

Taavi Madiberk, CEO and Co-Founder of Skeleton Technologies, said the partnership combines Skeleton Technologies’ innovative technology with Siemens’ global industrial capabilities, helping accelerate AI infrastructure deployment, unlock more computing power, and improve energy efficiency. Markus Grabmeier, Head of Siemens’ Electrical Products Business, said the Skeleton Technologies product portfolio deeply complements Siemens’ comprehensive data center solutions. The joint innovation roadmap will establish benchmark solutions for next-generation data center white spaces, with manufacturing and delivery supported by Siemens’ strong production network covering Europe and the Americas.
