Southern Energy Regulator Promotes Distribution-Microgrid Coordination to Solve Urban-Village Power Supply Problems

Recently, the Southern Energy Regulatory Bureau conducted on-site research in Guangzhou’s Baiyun District, guiding power supply enterprises to promote distribution-microgrid coordination to effectively solve the difficult problem of power supply management in urban villages.

During the summer peak load period this year, the Guangzhou Baiyun Power Supply Bureau, based on the complex power supply scenarios of urban villages in megacities, relied on smart distribution network upgrades to create a distribution-microgrid coordination demonstration zone. Through second-level collection of all power usage data in transformer areas, early warning of overloading risks, and local consumption of flexible resources, it promoted the transformation of power supply operation and maintenance models from traditional “post-event repair” to “pre-event prevention,” targeting the pain points of low voltage, line overloading, and prominent electrical safety hazards in urban villages. This is a typical practice of intelligent upgrading of characteristic township distribution networks under the “three batches” approach.

The core of the distribution-microgrid coordination demonstration zone lies in the construction of a smart new distribution network. Through second-level collection of all power usage data in transformer areas, power supply enterprises can monitor the load changes of distribution transformers in urban villages in real time, detecting voltage anomalies and line overloading risks in advance. The local consumption capacity of flexible resources effectively alleviates the pressure on distribution network upgrade projects and reduces the investment costs of power supply enterprises.

Next, the Southern Energy Regulatory Bureau will continue to strengthen guidance, promote the refinement and transformation of pilot achievements from the distribution-microgrid coordination into replicable and promotable institutional experience, rely on the construction of smart new distribution networks, continuously solve the power supply difficulties in urban villages, and comprehensively improve the level of public energy supply assurance.
