On September 18, State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Co., Ltd. reported that Jiangsu’s interprovincial power import reached a record peak of 41.64 million kW, a 2.7% increase year-on-year. Meanwhile, during July–August 2026, clean energy accounted for over 60% of electricity transmitted through Jiangsu’s main interprovincial transmission channels, with the green quality of interprovincial imports steadily improving—providing strong support for safe and stable grid operation during the summer peak demand period and for the green transition of the energy structure.
Multiple Records Broken During Summer Peak
Since early summer, Jiangsu has experienced sustained high temperatures, compounded by structural electricity demand growth from advanced manufacturing and computing industries. Provincial electricity load remained at a high level throughout. During the summer peak period, four key metrics on the Jiangsu grid all reached historical highs: peak system load, evening peak load, daily electricity consumption, and maximum interprovincial power import.
The peak system load reached 160.9 million kW, breaking historical records four times this summer and becoming the first grid in the State Grid system to surpass 160 million kW. While promoting stable full-output operation of all types of generation units within the province and maximizing renewable energy output, Jiangsu全力争取 (strived vigorously) for interprovincial power resources.
Six Ultra-High-Voltage “Great Arteries” Deliver Clean Electricity
Jiangsu has now built six interprovincial UHV/EHV transmission “great arteries,” forming a multi-route power supply pattern linking North China, Northeast China, Southwest China, and the Wan-Dian Dong-Song (Anhui-to-Eastern-Jiangsu) channels.
The Yanhuai (Shanxi-to-Jiangsu) and Xitai (Inner Mongolia-to-Jiangsu) DC links deliver power from Shanxi and Inner Mongolia; the Longzheng, Jinshu, and Jianshu DC links transport clean hydropower from the Three Gorges and Sichuan regions; and the Huaishang UHV AC line delivers power from Anhui.
This summer, the Yanhuai, Xitai, and Longzheng channels all operated at maximum transmission capacity. The Xitai DC link achieved a maximum transmission power of 8.3 million kW, up 3.7% from last year’s peak.
According to Yang Wenming, Deputy Director of the Equipment Department at State Grid Jiangsu UHV Company, the Yanhuai and other interprovincial UHV channels delivered over 33 billion kWh in July–August, accounting for approximately 18% of the province’s total electricity consumption during the same period.
Since the 14th Five-Year Plan began, Jiangsu’s interprovincial power has hit new highs annually, growing from 30.13 million kW in 2021 to 41.64 million kW this year—a 38% increase. Interprovincial imports have gradually transitioned from seasonal “emergency supplementation” to year-round “normal support.”
Interprovincial Power Fuels Regional Industrial Development
Interprovincial power provides strong momentum for regional industrial development. Zhou Yuze, a dispatching comprehensive technology specialist at the State Grid Changzhou Power Supply Company’s Dispatching Control Center, reported that during peak summer hours, interprovincial power accounted for up to 93.16% of Changzhou’s grid load, effectively ensuring stable livelihood electricity supply and orderly enterprise production.
Changzhou’s peak grid load this summer reached 13.18 million kW, a 5.5% increase year-on-year. In Suzhou—home to the highest electricity load of any prefecture-level city in China at 36.15 million kW peak—interprovincial imports reached a maximum of 15.8 million kW, helping the city smoothly navigate its peak moment.
Next Steps: Mengsu UHV DC Link to Come Online
Looking ahead, State Grid Jiangsu Power will accelerate construction of the Sutong GIL Pipeline Hall and other embedded DC transmission projects, increasing intra-provincial “north-to-south” power transfer capacity to over 32 million kW. The company will also drive the smooth commissioning of the UHV Mengsu (Inner Mongolia-to-Jiangsu) DC transmission project in the mid-to-late 15th Five-Year Plan period, continuously optimizing the interprovincial power structure and maintaining the clean energy share of interprovincial imports above 60%.
