The Economic and Technology Research Institute of State Grid Hebei Electric Power Co., Ltd. has recently completed an analysis of the grid’s available open capacity for electric heavy-truck charging infrastructure at expressway service areas in the southern Hebei grid, surveying the grid carrying capacity around 264 service areas on 28 expressways in the region and providing data support for the scientific layout of the heavy-truck charging network.
The analysis was carried out by a special working team formed by the institute together with relevant city-level power supply companies. The team systematically sorted out the supply capacity of 10 kV distribution lines and 35 kV and above substations around the service areas and, taking the development trend of high-power charging technology into account, performed station-by-station calculations and line-by-line verification across three time horizons — near term (2026), medium term (2027) and long term (2028–2030) — to comprehensively assess the available capacity margins around each service area.
The work produced a heat map of the available open grid capacity around the service areas, visually presenting the current state and future supply foundation of the grid near expressway service areas. It can directly support the scientific siting of charging stations, the formulation of connection plans and the revision of grid planning. High-power charging loads place high demands on distribution network carrying capacity, and such station-by-station, line-by-line capacity surveys also form an important part of the preliminary work for upgrading distribution lines and substations.
